Instructions: This checklist is meant to serve as a general guideline for our client facilities as to the level of your skills within your nursing specialty. Please use the scale below to describe your experience/expertise in each area listed below.

HIM Department Operations Understanding of the daily operations including staffing, budgeting, regulatory compliance, customer service management, etc.
Develop & Implement Policies and Procedures Researching, developing, and implementing policies and procedures
Address Operational Issues Addressing operational issues and assuring timely resolution, or escalating to the HIM Director if the issue cannot be resolved timely, or assistance is needed
Work Independently Working independently, possessing excellent judgment and decision making skills
Resolve Patient Complaints Resolving and managing patient complaints in a timely and courteous manner
HIM Reports Writing reports and interpreting data related to HIM activities
Regulatory and Compliance Standards Remaining current and relevant with all regulatory and compliance standards including, but not limited to, The Joint Commission, Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), and Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS)
Coding Concepts and Guidelines Remaining current regarding changes to coding rules and conventions for ICD-9-CM and ICD-10-CM/PCS
Medical Terminology Knowledge Knowledge of medical and procedural terminology, Anatomy & Physiology (A&P)
Documentation and Reimbursement Remaining current on reimbursement and documentation rules and regulations
Effective Communication Applying excellent interpersonal skills and outstanding communication to major stakeholders, such as staff, physicians, executives, and the public
Team Communication Effectively communicating and ensuring that policies are communicated to employees through direct communication at department meetings or communication through the department management team
Education Developing and providing cost effective and competency-based educational seminars that can be used within the work setting to address cultural issues and overcome fears relating to adoption of new technology
Verbal and Written Communication Skills Recommending and developing strategies with customers (including senior leadership for hospitals, physicians, and others) on data management and system changes based on careful analysis of current processes and market trends
Education Identifying appropriate resources and sources of information for use in education that supports learning environments and fully reflects the healthcare electronic environment in which health professionals practice and embrace the adoption of new technology
Manage, Develop, and Retain Staff Coaching, mentoring, educating, and providing staff with ongoing performance feedback
Quality Assurance (QA) and Improvement Establishing, managing, and coordinating department quality assessment processes through internal audits and quality audits by job function
Project Management Managing significant projects that take an extended period of time to complete and require allocation of significant resources (e.g. implementation of Electronic Health Record (EHR), collection and distribution of mega data, and/or education of patients regarding access to health data information portals)
